1. Livestock Development

The main issues that we deal with under this focus area include amongst others livestock diseases control and management, marketing, pasture depletion/environmental degradation, loss of herds to raids and deaths and changing pastoralist lifestyles and its impacts on livestock management. The objective under this sub program is to develop livestock production into an economically viable & sustainable livelihood economy for the pastoralist community through improved and increased livestock production and better market access to livestock and livestock products.

The following broad activities are being implemented under this sub program under the various indicated drought cycle management phases:
i) Preparedness/Normalcy phase

  1. Restocking.
  2. Livestock breeding
  3. Range management
  4. Create market linkages and provide market information.
  5. Livestock marketing groups formation and management.
  6. Facilitate extension services, drugs availability and disease control
  7. Facilitate the establishment of marketing yards & construction of abattoirs.
  8. Facilitate formation/train community groups (disease monitoring committees, para-vets).
  9. De- stocking.
  10. Supplementary feeding.
  11. Mass treatment of livestock.

Natural Resource Management (NRM)

This sub program deals with the problems related to pasture depletion and environmental degradation due to overgrazing and encroachments, climatic change (shifting seasonal patterns), persistent droughts, over population and the resultant competition for the limited natural resources. The objective is thus to ensure environmental conservation and pastoralists drought resilience through community organization and sensitization on drought cycle management and community based disaster risk reduction approaches.

In order to adequately deal with the highlighted challenges, PISP explores amongst others the following broad activities to realize the indicated objectives.

  • Community training on importance of efficient stock (range) management, proper land use planning and soil conservation.
  • Dissemination of information on early warning systems through public outreach.
  • Facilitate relevant fodder production technologies (e.g. suitable grass and high value trees)
  • Establish and or strengthening community based structures e.g. environmental and or water/rangeland management committees to regulate grazing & animal watering patterns
  • Facilitate the establishment of environment friendly micro enterprise development initiatives to diversify livelihoods e.g. harnessing of gums and resins
  • Environmental awareness and management initiatives e.g. afforestation, protection of water catchments, awareness campaigns at schools & communities level
  • Undertaking environmental impact assessment prior to implementation of program activities as well as adoption of stipulations of the national environmental act and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) regulations
  • Support introduction of drought resistant crops, provision of tools, seedlings & other farm implements to farmers and fodder production, harvesting & storage.
  • Support the use of alternative environmental friendly energy saving sources
  • Introduce measures to contain destruction and degradation around water points e.g. the establishment of tree nurseries around them & sell seedlings/social forestry schemes
  • Support groups dealing in waste management and recycling.
