A message from Umuro Roba Godana, Executive Director of Pastoralists Integrated support Programme (PISP)
Hello, I'm Umuro Roba. It's an honour for me to lead one of the Northern Kenya’s foremost development and humanitarian agency.
As the Executive Director for almost two years now and a beneficiary of its efforts for a decade I’ve come to know the organization well and have been highly impressed with its people, partners and its impact.
For almost 13 years PISP has been helping to address poverty among the Northern Kenya’s poorest communities. Today, we operate in nearly all sub-locations in greater Marsabit District. Among our 26 staff we have experts in Water Sanitation and Hygiene, microfinance, Livestock, Education, Governance and peace building.
PISP innovative programmes among the pastoral nomads in northern Kenya received recognition from the international community, specifically the Equator Initiative, for being one of the outstanding grassroots project in the equatorial belt in 2004. The international award was given by the UNDP, IUCN, Nature Conservancy, IDRC, ICDR, United Nations Foundation, and her development partners to grass root initiative around the world that have achieved tremendous success in reducing poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. PISP remain a lead member of the world forums such as World Initiative for Sustainable Pastoralism (WISP) and World Alliance for Mobile Indigenous People (WAMIP). In recognition of its noble work PISP is currently the elected President of WAMIP, Global Pastoralist Forum.
It's the depth of our work at the grass-roots level that enables us to know the people, the problems and the potential of the communities we serve.
As a result, each year we bring meaningful life transformation to thousands of the Kenya’s most-marginalized people and communities.
Each generation is responsible to do the very best it can with the resources it has. I am very excited by the many opportunities to make a difference for people who have little voice in today's world - especially the pastoralists.
I invite you to join us. Together we can make a difference.
That’s our vision of resilient community.
